Shipping and Returns 

Please note that all prices quoted below are in Canadian Dollars.  During checkout you may see prices converted into your final checkout currency (i.e. USD) based on the daily exchange rate.

Shipping rates are subject to change at any point, depending on provider fee increases and exchange rate fluctuations.

We are located in Canada and ship domestically via Canada Post.

Insurance All shipments will be covered for the standard carrier insured amounts, which is generally up to $100 depending on the service selected. International shipments are sent EMS and do not include any insurance. If you would like additional insurance including coverage for porch theft, please select/opt into the Route Package Protection on the cart page. You can read more about Route here.

In Canada we offer free shipping on orders $100CAD and over.  If your order is valued below our free shipping amount, Canada Post calculates the rate it will cost to ship your order. 

Curbside / Local Pickup - We conveniently offer a free local pickup option for customers located in Toronto.  This option appears automatically based on your postal code. 

Oversize Items Within Canada
For Wobbel Boards and select oversize items (i.e. Grimms Large Stepped Pyramid), a $20 oversize surcharge is applied to customers located outside of Ontario and Québec. 

In the United States we primarily ship USPS.  The large majority of our shipping in the US is via USPS, directly out of Buffalo, NY.  We occasionally ship large orders containing multiple heavy toys to the US via Canada Post or via courier.  In select instances (your order might be just under or over a shipping weight limit), we may divide your order into two separate shipments, and you will receive an email with both of your tracking numbers.   

Our US packages are sent to our USPS shipping service via courier. Once they arrive, they are sorted and then driven across the border. Typically, packages show up in USPS tracking 2 business days after we've created the shipping label and you've received your shipping notification. Packages that are picked up from our warehouse on a Friday are received by our shipping service on the following Monday/business day, and generally appear in the USPS tracking system the next evening. If the USPS depot is particularly busy, it may take an extra day for the package to be scanned and appear in their tracking.

We offer the following shipping options:

  • First Class is tracked but does not include insurance
  • Priority is tracked and includes the standard USPS $100 insurance. Please note that this insurance ONLY applies to when the package is in USPS custody and does not cover parcel theft after delivery.
  • Priority Express is tracked and has a guaranteed 1-2-day delivery. If you select this option, please be aware that we require two business days to process this order and get it to our USPS shipping service. 

Grimms and Grapat both introduced geofencing rules earlier this year and we are no longer able to ship these brands outside of Canada. Some items we are unfortunately unable to ship to the US due to weight/size limitations, such as Wobbel boards.

If you would like to request a signature to confirm delivery or extra insurance, please contact us so that we can let you know what the additional cost will be. 

Please note that Insurance on US packages only covers items that are lost or damaged while in the possession of the US Postal Service. Once an item has been delivered, it is legally no longer USPS’ responsibility and their insurance no longer covers the package. Insurance does not cover packages stolen from porches. If a parcel has been stolen after delivery, please contact your local Police Station to report the theft. You may also have coverage through your home or renter’s insurance, or via your credit card.

Internationally we ship via Canada Post, which does not include insurance by default on International orders. If you would like to include insurance, please contact us for a quote at hello@modernrascals.ca

Note that the shipping cost does not include any customs, duty, taxes, or handling fees that may be assessed when your package arrives. The buyer is responsible for paying all customs, duty, taxes, and handling fees. Your local postal system may assess and charge taxes (plus a handling fee) independently of duty. For example, the VAT threshold in the UK is 15 pounds, whereas the threshold for duty is 135 pounds (Brexit changes still tbd).

Order Cancelations

Cancelations will be at the sole discretion of Modern Rascals and we may not be able to support cancelations during periods of high sales volume or lower staffing, due to the disruption to our workflow.

Due to changes from major payment processing platforms, any canceled orders will be subject to a 3% order cancelation fee. This covers the payment processing cost we incurred when we processed your original order, as this cost will no longer be refunded to us.

Return Policy


We have taken the time to describe each item as accurately as possible but are human and sometimes make mistakes. We have included information specific to Clothing and Toys below. For full information about our return policy and timeframes, please scroll down past the Clothing and Toy-specific sections.

Clothing - We understand that when shopping online sometimes we purchase the wrong size or don't love the colour. If that is the case, we encourage you to contact us via email (hello@modernrascals.ca) to set up an exchange or refund, subject to stock availability or any other limitations. Please continue reading for our full Return Policy, as some items are Final Sale. Clothing items that are on Sale for 20% (or less) of the original Retail Price (and are not Final Sale) may be returned for Store Credit.

Toys - For our wooden toys there is a normal range of wood grain and natural markings that are part of the product. These are not considered defects by the brands we carry and are instead celebrated as part of what makes wooden toys unique. Returns will not be accepted for not liking the wood grain on your individual item, as this is not considered a defect.

For toys, sizes, age recommendations, and safety warnings are included in every product description and returns are not accepted for size or age appropriateness reasons.

If you would like us to pick a toy with the least (or the most!!!) markings, please contact us ahead of time and we'll try our best to find something that suits your specific requirements. Some of the toys (like the Grimms rainbows) come sealed so we are unable to take a look at every side/piece ahead of time. There may be wood grain variations hidden inside that we are unable to see without opening the package.

Please contact Modern Rascals (hello@modernrascals.ca) prior to making a return to receive a Return Authorization. General returns (those not of a defect in manufacturing and/or workmanship) must be made within 14 days of delivery. After 14 days all purchases are final with no returns, exchanges, or shop credit provided. Please make sure to check what items are final sale. Please provide the following in your email:

  • your order #
  • the item(s) you wish to return and/or exchange
  • photos of any defects

Returns must be in the mail on their way back to us within 7 days of our approval of a return (based on the date on the postmark). 

Please note that the customer is responsible for paying all return shipping fees. We suggest that you ship the item(s) back with tracking information to ensure it is received by us. If you ship without tracking, we may not receive the return and cannot issue refunds on items that have not been received. We do not accept returns in person due to safety and security concerns.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging with tags (if any were included). We understand that kids may have tried it on for size, or to see if they are comfortable with the fabric/tags.

If your order qualified for free shipping and the return of the item(s) changes your original order total so that it is below the minimum price point for free shipping, we will deduct our actual shipping cost from the sum of the price of the returned item(s) to cover fees incurred with shipping your original items.

Our base currency is Canadian Dollars. If you checked out in a non-CAD currency (e.g. USD), your return will be completed in CAD and converted at the current daily exchange rate and refunded to your payment method (credit card, PayPal, etc.). The exchange rate will likely not be the same as when you originally made the purchase and so there may be a difference in what is refunded as a result.

All returns are subject to a 10% restocking fee. This is an administrative fee that covers the costs associated with the original shipping, as well as the time to inspect and process the return. This restocking fee may be waived or reduced at the absolute and sole discretion of Modern Rascals.

International Orders that are returned due to a refusal to pay customs, duty, taxes, or handling fees or incorrect addresses will not be refunded unless prior approval has been received. 

Shipping Returns Back to Our Warehouse

To return your product, you should email us at hello@modernrascals.ca and we'll let you know what address to mail the item to. Please note that we do not accept returns or exchanges in person, to ensure the safety of our staff.

For US customers, we have a return address in the US that we will provide once your return has been approved. 

All costs incurred with shipping the item(s) back to Modern Rascals will be the customer's responsibility. We do not accept returns in person due to safety and security concerns.

We suggest that you ship the item(s) back with tracking information to ensure it is received by us. If you ship without tracking, we may not receive it and we cannot issue refunds on items that we did not receive.

Final Sale

We do not accept returns or exchanges on any sale, last chance, or promotionally priced items. 

Underwear, socks, hats, and swimsuits are all final sale for hygiene reasons.


Incorrect Addresses

We use the shipping address provided during checkout to ship all orders. If an incorrect address is provided, we will try our best to help coordinate getting the package back. The customer will be responsible for paying any additional shipping charges, as we'll need to re-label the package. While most packages make their way back to us (although this may take some time), it is possible that packages sent to the wrong address may be lost for good. We are unable to replace packages lost as a result of an incorrect address.

In the event that we have made a mistake with the address during the fulfillment process, we will absolutely figure out a way to make it right - we'll replace items if we still have stock available, work with you to figure out replacement items, or offer a refund. 

Fulfillment Mistakes

If we have made a mistake and sent you the wrong item, we will figure out a way to make it right - we'll replace items if we still have stock available, work with you to figure out replacement items, or offer a refund.  

Fulfillment mistakes made that result in the shipment of incorrect products to you will absolutely be accepted for return. Modern Rascals will cover all shipping costs for you to return the incorrect items, as well as to mail out your replacement items. 

Manufacturer/Workmanship Defect Returns & Replacements

Sometimes manufacturer's defects happen. Let us know! We may be able to replace items if they are defective or damaged, depending on available stock. If a replacement is not available, we may be able to exchange for a similar value item or refund that portion of your order.  

We highly recommend that you open all items (including the toys) when you initially receive them. Please let us know of any initial defects or missing pieces within 14 days of delivery. After 14 days we will be unable to provide replacements or exchanges. (this timing is in place to help manage inventory levels during high volume periods)

Please provide the following in your email:

  • your order #
  • the item(s) with any issues
  • photos of any defects

If a defect has occurred after light/reasonable usage, please email us at hello@modernrascals.ca and we'll see what we can do. Note that this would not include dings / dents / colour transfer / etc. that are all normal with play.

Exchanges (if applicable)

We can sometimes accommodate exchanges if we still have stock available in a different size/colour/style or a similarly priced item. Send us an email at hello@modernrascals.ca and we'll see what we can figure out!

Please note that customers are responsible for shipping the item to be exchanged back to our warehouse, and Modern Rascals will cover the cost of shipping the exchanged item back.

Sale and Final Sale items are not eligible for exchanges.

Refunds (if applicable) 

Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund.

If you are approved, then your refund will be processed and a credit will automatically be applied to your original method of payment. It may take 3-5 business days for the refund to reflect in your account or on your credit card, based on the time for the credit to work through the financial system.

Late or Missing Refunds (if applicable)

If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank or credit card account again, including your previous statement as depending on when your account cycles the refund may be processed after your statement date.

Then, contact your credit card company - it may take some time before your refund is officially posted. Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.

All refunds are made against the original transaction and form of payment.
